Whether your dumpster is used for your business or your home complex, no one wants pests to pay a visit to them. Most don’t realize that they are unintentionally setting up a perfect environment for pests. Not only will this cause a problem for your dumpster, but it also raises the risk of infestation in other areas of your home or business.
Depending on what you are using your dumpster for, you are increasing the possibility of pest infestation. For example, termites will most likely come from old wood thrown away and food will attract flies, cockroaches, and rodents.
Be in control of everything entering your dumpster, not just what you are throwing away.
Placement
To follow best practices, your dumpster should be at least 50 feet away from your home or business, but if you can try for 100 feet. This extra space will make sure that even in the chance of pest infestation, your home or business will be safe from it. Also, try to place your dumpster around a sewage drain, so that excess fluids that may be a result of disposals have a proper place to go rather than pooling at your dumpster.
It is also good to place your dumpster away from any bushes, trees, or heavily wooded areas. This is where your pests live, so don’t let your dumpster move right next door. If this is not an option for you, make sure that any greenery surrounding your dumpster is well kept and trimmed regularly.
Cleaning
We know that we associate dumpsters with filth. However, your dumpster should be cleaned regularly. By using high-pressure washers, you should be sure to clean both the inside and outside of your dumpster to prevent debris build-up that would attract pests.
If your dumpster is displaying signs of rusting beyond cleaning, it can be a good indicator that it might be time to replace your dumpster. You should also note any other holes or cracks that would not be fixable.
Daily Maintenance
Dumpsters can be a great tool to have daily to help clear and clean your spaces. So, you must do all you can to keep it clean and durable for as long as you can.
When you are using the dumpster for disposal, be sure to keep all trash or debris inside the dumpster. To ensure that you won’t have overflowing trash, have a schedule set for when your dumpster gets cleared out. Also, make sure that all trash that is entering the dumpster is in a trash bag and sealed tight. Loose or open trash bags is a big way to invite pests into your dumpster.
Cover up your dumpster. Even when your dumpster is clean, one of the easiest and most efficient ways to keep bigger pests, like rodents and raccoons, out is by keeping it closed. If your dumpster or dumpster rental does not come with a lid, try using a tarp or plastic to keep it covered.
